Jesus and his companions come to life within the rich context of turbulent 1st century Palestine. The political, socio-economic, and religious conditions of the Jewish people living under Roman rule provide moving and meaningful insight into Jesus, his life, and his teachings. His kingdom of love and service contrasts sharply with the kingdom of the Roman Empire ruled by Caesar through domination and cruelty. These kingdoms ultimately collide, but the apparent winner does not have the final word. Stories from the author’s life are intertwined as the combination proclaims a message transcending time and place about human struggle against oppression and a path to liberation. Touching, funny, suspenseful, and, at times, startlingly beautiful, Sight In The Sandstorm illustrates the power of an extravagantly loving God, a God on the loose in the whole world then and now.

Retired pastor Ann Temkin has creatively, skillfully woven her personal experiences growing up in a challenging setting with material from the New Testament. I found her drawing of parallels between her life and the time and experiences of Jesus to be deeply moving. She gave me a greater sense of the Jewish context of Jesus' life and work as well as the implications of Roman dominance of the region. I felt more immediacy and deepened meaning even in bible excerpts that are very familiar. The content is substantial, but the story flows .

Sight In The Sandstorm Jesus In His World and Mine Ann J Temkin 8601409601892 Books Reviews

I recently finished reading Sight in the Sandstorm, by Ann J. Temkin, which is interestingly subtitled “Jesus in His World and Mine.” Part memoir, part re-imagination of the Gospels, this book surprised me in many ways.

I’m not one to read memoirs, normally. However, the fact that the author is the child of a Russian Jew and an English lapsed-Methodist, who met God in a Roman Catholic church and went on to become an ordained Protestant minister piqued my interest. And yes, Temkin’s story is very interesting; complete with anti-Semitic persecution, rebellion by living in an artist’s Paris loft, mystical encounters with God, and memories of an airplane hijacking. She makes connections between what happened to her, and a story from the Bible in most cases.

However, what makes this book so compelling is Temkin’s re-imagining of Jesus’ life. She uses rich, meticulous description and intimate detail; fleshing out Biblical conversations with asides and hidden questions and motives, and brings Jesus and His companions to vibrant life. For instance, in chapter 14, she tells a parable of a 5-year-old Jesus bringing his beloved lamb, Ahuvi, to the Jerusalem temple for Passover. When Jesus realizes that ‘sacrifice’ means that Ahuvi has to actually die and cannot come back home with him, his heartbroken sobs brought me to tears as well. Temkin’s gift for imaginative writing is even more evident in chapter 17, in the graphic and visceral description of Jesus’ treatment at the hands of the Roman soldiers. She connects Jesus’ thoughts and words to the future and a universe full of individual human beings (named, in some cases) abused, tortured and victimized by other human beings. It is powerful stuff, and it broke my heart.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the final chapter of the book felt awkward, with a forced and tenuous connection to the previous few chapters. I understand Tempkin’s intent to sum up and bring her story full-circle, but it felt contrived to me. Despite the awkward finale, Sight in the Sandstorm is well-worth the read.

I thought I knew this Author and this Jesus, but what an airy window to the soul of each is thrown open in this book! Thank you, Ann Temkin for such an intimate portrait of both you and our Savior.
Temkin's book transports the reader to two worlds. The first is a realistic, even participatory, world of Jesus's life as a Jew. The second is Temkin's own life as a second-generation American Jew. These endearing narratives skillfully parallel as Judaism and Christianity are woven together to challenge and to form a deep bond within each reader.
Interesting juxtaposition of events in the author's life and those in Jesus' life. Her research is impeccable and the details of daily life in Biblical times are fascinating. Well written, unique approach.
This book is a blend of personal memoirs and stories from the New Testament, linking thoughts and emotions of Jesus' followers with adventurous stories from the author's own life. In both cases, the author makes a strong case regarding the eternal importance of compassion, and shows that events from 2,000 years ago are still relevant today.
Ann Temkin is a skillful story teller, interweaving her personal stories in non-linear, non-chronological but meaning-making ways- that effectively elucidate the life and message of Jesus of Nazareth. Temkin uses the metaphor of desert winds to describe "the winds of the Spirit which disturbs, throwing the sand of knowledge in the air, tossing us about … and moving us then into a bright new day of vision, clarity, and joy". Thus the title serves as a descriptive foreshadowing and prelude to a soulful reading of the book.
Ann Temkin mixes fascinating stories from her life with imaginative retellings of gospel stories. The book is an easy read and yet provokes thoughts about God, social justice and compassion. Read it and agree with Temkin that "God is on the loose."
